TROOP 42 HISTORY

 

Troop 42 was formed in January of 1934.  The sponsoring institution is not known, but the troop was located in the lower Greenville Avenue area.  The first Scoutmaster was Mr. C. L. Doss. He served as Scoutmaster until 1936.

 

SCOUTMASTERS

 

In 1936 Riggs Presbyterian Church sponsored the troop, and Mr. W. R. “Pop” Richardson became the Scoutmaster.  “Pop” served over 50 years in the scout program.  During the time “Pop” was Scoutmaster the troop grew to a total of 72 registered scouts.  “Pop” served as Scoutmaster until 1947.

 

Riggs Presbyterian Church was later to become St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, which is the troops current sponsor.

 

From 1947 until 1973, the troop had numerous Scoutmasters.  They are:  1947 to 1950, Mr. George Germond Jr.  1950 to 1956, Mr. Kingsland Arnold 1956 to 1958, Mr. Joe Mathews 1958, Mr. Harold Dry, and Mr. W. W. Schaeffer 1959 to 1963, Mr. Robert A Johnson Jr. 1963 to 1969, Mr. C. G. Hudson Jr. 1969 to 1972, Mr. Richard Meier, and 1972, Mr. A. J. Adams Jr.

 

In 1973, Mr. D. Charles Chapman took over as Scoutmaster and served until 1980.  Since that time Mr. Chapman has served as a Committee Member.  We lost Mr. Chapman in 1997.

 

Mr. Harry L. Bubeck joined Troop 42 as a boy in 1973. He had served as Advisor for Post 709 prior to becoming Scoutmaster in 1980.  He served until 1992, to become the Mikanakawa Lodge Adviser of the Circle Ten Council.  He currently serves as Co-Troop Committee Chairman.

 

Mr. Homer Canada joined Troop 42 as Assistant Scoutmaster in 1985.  He has served as Cub Master of Pack 325 prior joining the troop.  He became Scoutmaster in 1992.

 

In 1995, Mr. Carlos Vielma became Scoutmaster.  Mr. Vielma joined the troop in 1982 as a boy.  A veteran of Philmont, he served as Patrol Leader at the 1985 National Scout Jamboree, and attended five summer camps with the troop.  Mr. Vielma is a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow.

 

In June of 1996, DeYo Leonard became Scoutmaster.  An Eagle Scout out of Troop 64, he served as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader at the 1989 National Scout Jamboree and is a veteran of Philmont.  Mr. Leonard is a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow. 

 

In April of 2000, Brian Bennett became Scoutmaster.  An Eagle Scout, he served as Lodge Chief of Mikanakawa Lodge in 1988-1989.  Mr. Bennett is a Vigil member of Order of the Arrow.  Mr. Bennett has served as Assistant Scoutmaster for many years.

 

In July of 2000, Gary Randall became Scoutmaster.  He was a longtime scouter with the Kansas City Boy Scout Council.  Gary moved away to Austin, Texas.

 

In May of 2001, Dr. Michael Holub became Scoutmaster.  He previously served as Assistant Scoutmaster.

 

In October of 2005, Samuel Tates became Scoutmaster. He previously served as Assistant Scoutmaster.
